As I finish off my sixth National Weather Association annual meeting, and the second virtual one, I feel as recharged about the weather as I ever have! I have a lot of ideas for new things to produce in the coming days and weeks, so we’ll see how all that goes.

The weather out there is hot, with some pop-up showers and storms around to cool things off for some, but not many. While it’s 94 degrees as of 5:30 PM at the airport, rain is falling just a few miles to the east! That kind of scenario will be the case in the coming days, but not likely in that type of distribution. For some basics, here’s the outlook through the weekend:

  • Tonight-Partly cloudy, a couple showers or storms in the evening, patchy morning fog. Low 68.
  • Thursday-Mostly sunny, some pop-up showers and storms possible in the afternoon. High 92.
  • Thursday night-Partly cloudy, with a few evening showers and storms lingering. Low 67.
  • Friday-Mostly sunny, a slight chance of an afternoon shower or thunderstorm. High 91.
  • Saturday-Mostly sunny with a small chance of an afternoon shower or thunderstorm. High 91.
  • Sunday-Mostly sunny, maybe an afternoon shower or thunderstorm. High 92.

The thing about this forecast, is it’s pretty much the same! Our temperatures will be about the same each day, and the chance of rain and storms is about the same. There’s a lot of research going on about the formation of these storms that will hopefully bring us a way to predict where they’re going to happen and when on a more accurate basis than “maybe in the mountains” or “late in the afternoon.” I’m looking at the data on that very closely for sure!

Until the day comes when I’m more able to see where these things are going to pop up two, four, or six hours ahead of time, I have to be a bit more vague for now. Just be aware, as most around here are this time of year, that storms pop up in the afternoon and you need to take action to be safe from lightning, even if it’s not raining! That goes for sporting events and going to the fair, too.

When it doesn’t rain, heat will be an issue. It’s best to do things either early in the day or late in the day to decrease your chances of not having issues with said heat in the coming days. We’ll have temperatures getting into the 90s each afternoon all the way through the weekend.

Speaking of the fair, Appalachian Fair time is here! WHCB, 96.3 The Possum, 97.3 Love FM, and 93.7 Goat FM all have a presence at two booths at the Fair in commercial building #1! I’ll be there on Saturday afternoon in the WHCB booth. Stop by and say hello during the afternoons through Saturday!
