December 16, 2016 #TriCitiesWx Forecast

December 16, 2016

It has certainly been cold since yesterday, but warmer weather is coming! The bad news in the forecast is that rain is coming for the weekend as well. Welcome to the Tri-Cities Weather Blog forecast for tonight through Tuesday!

Cold weather is the story of the day, with the mid 30’s as warm as it gets in East Tennessee, Southwest Virginia, or Western North Carolina late this afternoon. We should see temperatures 20-25 degrees warmer tomorrow, but rain is also on its way. Here’s the outlook:

  • Tonight-Mostly cloudy, with rain moving in, maybe starting as freezing rain. Lows near 30.
  • Saturday-Mostly cloudy and windy, with scattered showers. High 58.
  • Saturday night-Mostly  cloudy with scattered rain showers. Low 48.
  • Sunday-Rain likely, temperatures falling during the day. Morning highs around 50.
  • Monday-Partly cloudy. High 45.
  • Tuesday-Mostly sunny. Highs near 50.

A cold front is on the way through the country, and it’s spreading rain and snow a long way. Clouds have been around today more than anticipated, and that’s kept temperatures a little too cool as well. Rain showers should start tonight, some of which may begin as freezing rain in spots tomorrow, but accumulation of ice isn’t expected. However, roads may be a little slick late tonight and early Saturday, so if you’re driving keep that in mind.

Everyone gets rain after that, as we get warmer through the day ahead of the cold front. We’ll get a break in rain tomorrow night, before heavier rain comes on Sunday. Sunday will get colder as it goes along, so that high of 50 degrees will likely happen shortly after midnight.

The cold front and rain are gone Sunday night, giving way to a few snow showers Sunday night. We’ll clear out a little bit on Monday, then a mostly sunny day thanks to high pressure on Monday. It looks right now like much of next week may be dry, but it’s a long way to go between now and then!

Enjoy the weekend, and try to stay dry in the process!
