Race Day II Forecast: August 21, 2016

August 21, 2016

As you probably know, the NASCAR race at Bristol Motor Speedway was postponed until Sunday at 1pm because of rain. With that in mind, here’s a special Tri-Cities Weather Blog forecast through tomorrow night!

A cold front extends from Michigan (where tornadoes happened near Grand Rapids today) through Indiana, near Western Kentucky and Tennessee, through Arkansas and Texas. That front moves through late tomorrow afternoon, which is not good news for NASCAR tomorrow.

However, there is an end in sight. The rain and storms we’ll see tomorrow will be scattered in nature, something like what we saw tonight. So there is the chance that we may get some racing in, and we might get to halfway.

The end in sight is that when the cold front moves through, rain will come to an end. Looks like the chances of rain drop off after 6pm or so Sunday night. So at worst, we might have another night race on our hands!

So, here are the forecast details:

Tonight-Cloudy, scattered showers and thunderstorms. Low near 70.

Sunday-Cloudy, with scattered showers and thunderstorms. High 78.

Sunday night-Rain ends during the evening, becoming partly cloudy overnight. Lows near 60.

As for racing chances for tomorrow:

Chance of delays: 60%

Chance of finishing the race by 6pm: 50%

Chance of finishing the race by 11pm: 90%

NASCAR could get sick and tired of trying, and if they’re close to lap 251 with rain nearby, they could shorten the race. It has happened before, so keep that in mind. Also be aware that Bristol Motor Speedway is preparing for the Battle at Bristol next month, so getting the track changed into a football field is on everyone’s mind as well. NASCAR may be convinced to end the race as soon as possible knowing that.

Either way, if you’re going to the race tomorrow, prepare for off and on showers and thunderstorms. The race will end on Sunday, the question is how long will NASCAR wait to finish, based on everything that’s going on.

I’ll have a full forecast for next week, including the Appalachian Fair, coming up tomorrow evening. Have a great Sunday!
