June 23, 2016 #VAwx Tornado Watch until 10pm

June 23, 2016

A Tornado Watch is up for the far northern part of the area, for Buchanan and Dickenson Counties in Southwest Virginia until 10pm. Severe thunderstorms are possible, with conditions that  could produce a tornado as well. This watch also includes Eastern Kentucky, most of West Virginia, and a lot of Southern Ohio.

The Tornado Watch includes Hurley, Harman, Grundy, Vansant, Mavisdale, Jewell Valley, Haysi, Clinchco, Clintwood, McClure, Trammel, and Dante, among others.

A watch means that conditions are favorable, in this case, for a tornado to form with severe thunderstorms. If you’re up in that area, be sure to know where to go in the event of a tornado warning. Easiest thing to remember is to get to the lowest floor, preferably a basement, and put as many walls between you and the outside as you can. Plan where you’re going to go now for when the storms come later!

Here’s a map of the Tornado Watch, again through 10pm tonight.

ww0289_radar_bigIf there are any warnings for Southwest Virginia or Northeast Tennessee, I’ll be on the air in various places in the Tri-Cities and online:

WHCB 91.5 FM or Listen Live.

WPWT Top Gun Radio, 870 AM (until sunset) and 100.7 FM (24/7).

WHGG Love FM 1090 and 1230 AM, 100.3 and 103.3 FM or Listen Live.

The WABN signals at 1230 AM and 103.3 FM are Washington County, Virginia, specific. For all other stations, you’ll hear live updates on any tornado warnings for all of Southwest Virginia, Northeast Tennessee, and far Northwest North Carolina.

Currently, this watch covers a very small part of our area. Regardless, any tornado warnings will be covered on-air! Meanwhile, there could be another watch issued for more of us during the course of the night. If that happens, it’ll be posted here. Check Twitter (Mike WHCB Top Gun Radio) for quick warning updates. It’s better to listen, though, because if I’m on the air tweeting might be difficult!

I’ll have a new forecast up by  6pm as I assess the storm threat for our area overnight.
