June 22, 2016 #TriCitiesWx Forecast

June 22, 2016

We’ve had a few storms in Southwest Virginia and far Northeast Tennessee today, and clouds have kept temperatures down today. While storms are a possibility each day into the weekend, hot weather makes a comeback starting tomorrow. Welcome to the Tri-Cities Weather Blog forecast for tonight through the weekend!

Those storms earlier were severe, in fact, with hail the size of quarters reported in Abingdon earlier this afternoon. That storm is gone, and we’ll have only scattered showers and storms overnight. Clouds that are hanging around will keep us warm and muggy tonight. Here’s the outlook:

Tonight-Cloudy, with a few rain showers or storms. Fog possible in the morning. Low 68.

Thursday-Partly cloudy. A few showers and storms move in late in the day. Highs near 90.

Thursday night-Scattered showers and thunderstorms. Lows near 70.

Friday-Partly cloudy, some scattered showers and storms. High 88.

Saturday-Partly to mostly sunny, small chance of an afternoon thunderstorm. Highs near 90.

Sunday-Partly to mostly sunny, a small chance of an afternoon thunderstorm. high 92.

Summer is going to crank itself up as we continue into the latter part of June, as it should be. A stationary front is causing the storms we’re getting today, and it will be close enough through tomorrow to cause a few showers and storms to move in here. Eventually, a cold front arrives from the northwest, and brings better chances of rain and storms on Thursday night.

Thinking about those storms, late Thursday and Thursday night could be interesting, with severe storms possible. Like today near Abingdon, we could see quarter sized hail and damaging winds with storms that should start Thursday afternoon in Southwest Virginia before they arrive late in the afternoon or early evening in Northeast Tennessee.

The front moves through, and we’ll get a few degrees off the thermometer with a small chance of rain Friday. After that, the weekend arrives as does the heat. We’ll hit 90 on Saturday, with low 90’s likely on Sunday. We’ll see heat of the afternoon showers and thunderstorms popping up, but most will stay hot and dry this weekend.

Make sure you follow me on Twitter for the latest weather updates. I post the latest watches here, then individual warnings are tweeted @wxmc when they are issued. Even when there are fewer storms, some of those pop-up storms can become severe, so be sure to get indoors if you hear thunder at any time of year!
