April 28, 2016 Severe Thunderstorm Watch

April 28, 2016

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for parts of our area:

It includes Buchanan, Tazewell, Smyth Counties and points east in Southwest Virginia, Ashe County and points east in North Carolina, and most of West Virginia. This watch is out until 11pm tonight.

Be on the lookout for storms that may produce damaging winds. Hail is also a possibility, up to and maybe bigger than the size of quarters.

According to the SPC, the chances of tornadoes with the storms are anywhere between Low and Very Low. That doesn’t mean zero, but the more likely scenarios will be damaging winds and hail. Of course, hazards from storms always include lightning, so if you’re close to any storm, make sure you go indoors!

There are a few storms starting to fire up along the Kentucky/Virginia border, and that might very well be what has a chance to become severe as we go through the evening.

I’ll have an updated forecast here on the blog by 5:30 this afternoon with more updates.
